Surrogate Motherhood

Lately I've been in a lot of conversations which center on surrogate motherhood.  I've heard lots of opinions.  For example, one of my sisters-in-law on the Enger side would do it in a heartbeat for someone she really loved, and the other feels really hesitant about it.  I know someone who just had a baby via a surrogate mother (in this case, the surrogate mother was a woman she did not know), and it seems more widely practiced. I have mixed feelings about surrogate motherhood, and was interested if the Church has said anything aboutit, and so I looked it up in Tim's Church Handbook of Instructions.  The only thing they say is that they strongly discourage it.  I feel like I can see the wisdom in discouraging it, but I am interested in what you think.  What are your thoughts on it?

  1. Ben says he wouldn't mind it... in fact it might be nice.

I don't feel very comfortable with surrogacy. I would, obviously, rather adopt. When I think about it... it doesn't seem a whole lot different than adoption, but at the same time... I don't know. I've had people offer to have a baby for me and I don't think I'd ever do that. As far as me being a surrogate mother... I've haerd pregnancy can put arthritis into remission. Maybe it is a good idea for me.

It would be interesting to learn why the church strongly discourages it.

    Funny Story:
There is a couple in this area that arranged to have a surrogate and a few months after the surrogate mother was pregnant the real mom got pregnant. The children will be about three months apart.

  2. I don't know why, but I've always been in favor of surrogacy (if for the right reasons). Ex. I don't condone a celebrity paying someone else to have their baby to save their body, but I think in some cases it's a really special thing. However, I wasn't aware that the church discourages it...maybe I should give it more thought.
